http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/programmes/kill_it/

ie so they can see where meat comes from then can decide informed to continue eating meat or not.

But informed about the process... And how young.

The show has people watch the process from video of life on the farm, then in comes the animals in the video, stunned, slaughtered, processed.

Then cooked, then presented as dinner

If my son was old enough I would have allowed him to watch, but he's only 5 months. However I remember watching a TV programme about a inner-city farm, there was a boy on a school visit there who refused to believe that the chickens were really birds because as far as he knew chickens came in plastic packaging from the supermarket, he could not reconcile what he ate with the feather creatures running around on the farm.

I think children should know where their food comes from and I'm also of the opinion that those who desire to wear furs should be forced to see exactly how their 'clothing' is produced. I may have a slewed view as I've always known where meat came from, my mother raised meat rabbits as part of a co-operative and we also kept chickens for eggs; we raised them in an incubator and then slaughtered them when they stopped producing. As a very young child I watched my mum kill and dress both rabbits and chickens and by age three had a reasonable understanding of anatomy.

Up here in northern Wisconsin parents take their little kids up in tree houses and show them what hunting season is all about. They watch the animals get shot, skinned, and gutted. Hunting season becomes their favorite time of the year. So I guess they have a pretty good idea about killing animals. I don't get it...

Showing these videos to a kid wouldn't be suitable I wouldn't think, just because that's not something they have to see. Kids need a lot of protein so that their brains can form, so they really need it. The cavemen had to eat meat, and it's still something that I'm pretty sure isn't ever going to stop.

But yeah, I've watched all of those videos and they make me cry. I wish that I could become a vegetarian but I really like meat. And plus, the animal has already been killed, why not make use of it, you know? I mean I feel bad, horrible about the way the animals are raised and killed. But little me can't exactly do much to stop it.

I guess I have really mixed feelings on this whole situation.

Im 16, i watched it as i was sick of eating meat and thinking an animal has died.

I was really disturbed by it, it was awful.

Since watching i have not eaten any meat and i think its the way it wil stay!

Its their choice too watch or not but it is quite horrifying, id say over 12ish would be okay

Also it depends if your from the UK, our society isnt used to hunting, and thinking of slaughter, we just tend to think meat is meat.

i was disgusted by this program. it was morally wrong. especially for younger children. i was sitting up with my daughter watching it as she was unwell and now i am having the problem of making her eat any sort of meat or dairy products. this has seriously affected her health as she in continually ill just from the cause of a program. some of the things shown on the tv was disgusting and uncalled for. fair enough children need to learn where their food comes from but not that way. that was far to graphic and traumatising.

my oldest is eight, but i wouldnt show him it,hes just started eatin bacon, knows it from an animal, but i dont think he has quite grasped, how it gets from the animal, and coz hes at an impreshionable age,i dont think i would tell him.how many adults know where mince, pork chops etc come from or how they end up in packets.ive been in a killin house for chickens, and its a very mechanical process, but it didnt stop me eatin them except i moved over to eatin organic chicken.

If you can't watch it, you shouldn't eat meat. I probably wouldn't show it to a child younger than 7 though.
