Do you choose to be gay or lesbian?

Okay, I'm in a heated up conversation with my friends, saying if you choose to be gay or lesbian. I think you don't, but my friend thinks you do.
Do we're kind on the verge of getting mad and all, so we need YOUR opinions!

In my A&P class, we read some studies that showed that male mice who were exposed to a great deal of estrogen early in gestation in the womb exhibited female characteristics, including allowing other male mice to mate with them. Female mice who were exposed to testosterone in the womb exhibited male characteristics in the same manner.

Scientists hypothesize that this may be the first indication that sexual orientation is a result of happenings in the womb of the mother, thus disproving the assumption that it is a choice.

Women sometimes continue taking birth control into their first month or so of pregnancy, thus exposing their children to female hormones like estrogen and progesterone. While this action rarely causes actual disorders, it may be a clue into the sources of sexual orientation.

I'm straight as an arrow, but I have plenty of homosexual friends who certainly didn't choose to be rejected by their families and friends for how they feel, and I believe them when they say that their orientation is not a choice just as I hope they believe me when I say the same for mine.

I think it's relevant to state that I am a Christian and thus have faced much opposition from my faith community regarding my opinion, but this is one thing I fall back on Christ's teachings of understanding and compassion over random Old Testament passages for my opinion.

No, of course you don't "choose" your sexual orientation. That's ludicrous, and a very backwards way of thinking. With all the social pressures of today, who the hell would "choose" to be homosexual??

Whatever your orientation, you just have an attraction to a certain people, and you can't help it. If you happened to be a gay male, then you can only feel attraction towards other men. A woman just won't appear attractive to you, and you would never be able to fall in love with her.

You could be heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, transgendered, (pedosexual?), zoosexual, or a number of other orientations. Pedosexuality and zoosexuality (the attraction to children and animals) are debatable as orientations, because of their controversial nature, but nonetheless, some psychologists believe these to be equally valid orientations to hetero and ****.

I don't think you choose anything. I think it has to do with genetics ( haha doesn't everything? lol ) or just the way your brain developed. I'm definatly straight for instance, but I do find some attraction to other girls, not like romanticly, but just 'wow she's pretty' and such. I think it's just in the brain.

No, it's not something someone chooses. Ask your friend if he/she could just choose to be gay. No, so that should prove that you're right. Common sense...

Also, there are gay people out there who don't want to be gay, so why would they choose to be anyway?

And there are straight people who don't want to be straight, so why can't they become bisexual/gay/asexual? Because that's who they are...

You don't choose it.

You're born that way.

If people chose to be lesbian/gay then that means the rest of the people choose to be straight and that doesn't make being straight any more natural than being lesbian/gay.

No. It's a fact that your sexual orientation is a matter of biology. You can't say "Oh, I think I'll be attracted to boys". No, it doesn't work that way.

Anyone is wrong who says it's a choice.

Sexual Orientation is NOT a choice.

I KNOW this is true because I long to be straight, but I'm bi. I can't help it.

It's been tested, and proven.

It's not a choice. It's the way you're born.

Girls who are "gay" may play with cars/trucks as very young children, as opposed to dolls/barbies. Boys may enjoy painting their nails, and dolls, etc. It is not a choice... =]

Also, every male born to a family has a higher chance of being Gay. This does not go for females, though.

Hmm... I found a study, but it's kind of long...

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/magazine/articles/2005/08/14/what_makes_people_gay/

Feel free to read it, if it's THAT important... -_- People won't change their opinions, though. And they WILL continue to argue with... Science :\

Think a bit. Why on EARTH would somebody WANT to be Gay, knowing they will be harassed, discriminated, and critiqued for it? People want happiness, and considering what people think of homosexuality, many Gays don't get too much support. Nobody would choose misery upon themselves. They are merely trying to be who they really are. And there is NOTHING wrong with that :)

I think everyone's born bisexual and you kind

of decide what you like through out your life.

It's not really a choice. It's a

preference that you can't change.

I agree with YOU! :) How can you choose to be gay/lesbian? It's your feelings that choose for you!!

I really don't think it's a choice. It's just about who you are attracted too, really. Right now I am with a guy, but I could be with a girl if I felt sexually and mentally attracted to her.

You DO NOT choose your sexual orientation AT ALL. I am bisexual, and I did not choose to be bisexual. I hate when people assume that I chose to be bisexual. I am sexually attracted to both men and women, and if I could choose, I would choose to be sexually attracted to women as opposed to both men and women. I would never choose to be ostracized by society due to my sexuality, nor does any gay or lesbian person I know. Who would choose to be discriminated against? I want to get married. I really, truly want to get married some day. If your sexual orientation WERE a choice -- which it isn't -- I would choose to be straight so I could legally get married. But, if I fall in love with a male, I can't get married, which is stupid, and if I had the choice, I'd choose to be straight. But, you don't choose your sexual orientation. My dad didn't choose to be straight. He was born sexually attracted to women. My neighbor, who is a lesbian, was born lesbian, and was shunned by her family because she is lesbian. Who the hell would CHOOSE to be shunned by their family due to sexual orientation?

Born that way. You don't just wake up one day and think, 'I'm going to stop liking guys, and start liking girls from now on!" Or vice versa.

Think of it this way.

Why would anyone in their right mind CHOOSE to be homosexual considering homophobes and gay bashers exist.

You didn't randomly tell yourself that you were going to be straight, did you? Didn't think so.

It's the person's choice. Whether there's a reson for it,I'm not sure. It's a person's choice, and they shouldn't get hated on for it. Just think about it this way-did you make the decision to be straight?
.....
2009-06-11 18:50:23 UTC
Nope, it's just something you are born with.
go blackhawks!

2009-06-11 18:45:42 UTC
idk because religion and athiest scientist say it is a choice as far as we know

but gay people say it's not a choice because why would they choose to deal with discrimination and all that stuff...i have mixed feelings about it

study has proven that it is a genetic disorder. no one chooses to be gay or lesbian.

'gay' girls usually do masculine things as kids ( play with cars, action figures, trucks) and guys vice versa.

no one choose to be what their attarcted to, so don't judge them

BTW: i only got thumbs down cuz i read the question wrong
............!
2009-06-11 18:48:56 UTC

because you do have some say in it

i mean you could pretend to be straight

or. you could have had bad experiences with the opposite sex

it kinda depends on your situation

Yes, I think it is a choice.

Bring on the thumbs down.
