My ex sister in law does not work and all of the children are either at school or daycare during the day (why the little ones go to daycare everyday I'll never understand ). Yet she wants her 11 year old daughter to take public transportation, the bus, home from school.
Am I wrong to be disturbed by this? Would you let your 11 year old daughter take the bus by herself?

Taking public transportation at the age of 11 is not good, I think 14 is right age when you can allow your children take public transport that too make assure they have sufficient money to travel, also know route and lot more. Still there are kids you will come across who start taking public transport at the age of 11, so Good Luck, need not worry.
Also, when you search in Google "taking public transportation alone right age" you will lots of forums and people comments that will help you out.

When I was 11 i had just started high school and would get the school bus and on weekends i would get the bus into town with my friends. Sometimes it depends on the child I was very sensible and mature where as my younger sister didnt go anywhere alone until she was 15 she was so naive and irresponsible.

ok, now try look at this through the 11 yr olds eyes...i know how it is coz i was 11 not that long ago and i remember wat it feels like. you are 11... all your friends go shopping by themselves and take public transport...you can`t...you feel like you won`t be let out of the house until you r 20...by then you`ll be too scared to go out in public....you feel childish and weak...sad...unindependent. thats how i felt and my parents still don`t let me out of the house without adult supervision(i`m 14). I think give her some independence, but if the distance is too far then no. And trust that she will be careful, because contrary to popular beleif teens and children aren`t mindless monsters who go crazy without an adult, in fact we have a perfectly good conscience by the age of 10.

No I would not, and she needs to get up and take her to school. If she doesn't work and has nothing else to do, then there is no excuse for her to not take her kid to school.
