View my most recent question to view my reasons for this but anyway i worked out when i'm there (FL) i'll be in the 10th grade but we start actual school at 4 so not like a pre school type thing and we don't have like a kindergarten we go reception then year 1 year 2 etc. So i think i'd be like a year ahead but not sure so would i be in the 11th grade at just turned 15 cos i wouldn;t wanna be younger than everyone in my grade, i'm already the youngest in my year at school. And i've already took 2 of my major exams that you usually take at 16 (i'm 14) cos they said i was advanced so would i have to go ahead because of that. So basically what grade do you THINK i would go in ? and could you please explain the whole american grade schooling system in extreme detail for me please ???

Kindergarten is age five, first grade is age six. I think kinder is what you would call reception year. Most kids graduate at age 18. There's not an early leaving exam system here, it's just considered dropping out. Sometimes I think the exam/leaving system might work better, because there are always those who are only there going through the motions.

As far as exams you have to take to graduate, different states have different requirements. You don't get to choose the exams you take in any state, as far as I am aware. If they are required for graduation, you have to pass them all.

The Florida State Board of Education (or whatever they call it there) probably has graduation requirements on their website.

Don't worry about the age difference. You don't want to be behind when you go back home! If you have the money, you might consider private school (what the Brits call public school--you have to pay for it, and it's pretty expensive). And there might not be as much difference as you think, because different states have different cut-off dates for entering school. Some use your age as of September 1, some use your age as of January. So there could be a pretty wide range of ages, as Americans tend to move around a lot, and once you've passed a grade, a new school won't make you repeat it just because you're young.

Every state is different but usually... it goes a little like this

elementary school

age 4-5-6 is kindergarten

6-7 1st grade

7-8 2nd grade

8-9 3rd grade

9-10 4th grade

10-11 5th grade

Middle school

11-12 6th grade

12-13 7th grade

13-14 8th grade

High school

14-15 9th grade (freshman year)

15-16 10th grade(sophomore year)

16-17 11th grade(junior year)

17-18 12th grade(senior year)

if you just turned 15 you could either be an old-normal 9th grader or a younger 10th grader.

were i live you would be either a freshman(9th grade) or sophomore(10th grade).

So i will explain what schooling is like were i live(it differs per state and area). In my school elementary school is k-5th(some places its k-6 or k-8).

Elementary school:

Kindegarten(K)- 5-6

1st grade- 6-7

2nd grade- 7-8

3rd grade- 8-9

4th grade- 9-10

5th grade- 10-11

Middle school is usually 6-8grade (some places are 7-8(usually called junior high), or no middle school/junior high at all)

Middle school:

6th grade- 11-12

7th grade- 12-13

8th grade- 13-14

High school are your last 4 years of schooling before you can either go on to college for a specialized area of the career you want, or you can just get a job) In high school you have to complete so many credits to graduate(usually 1 credit per term. There are 4 terms in a year) at my school you need 60 credits total(4 history credits, 4 science credits, 4 math credits, 4 communications(sometimes called language arts or english its basically a grammar type class) and then you need so many credits in electives(extra classes like gym, or tv production ect) unlike many countries there are no final examinations though if you want to go on to college you need to take the SAT or ACT which tests you on enlish, science, math and maybe history? i cant remember :p

high school:

9th grade(freshman)- 14-15

10th grade(sophomore)- 15-16

11th grade(junior)- 16-17

12th grade(senior)- 17-18

Some of this info is diff. depending on were you live in the USA or how old you were when you went to kindergarten or if you failed a class, were held back or skipped ahead a grade.

Some parents put their children in Pre-k which starts at age 4. Kindergarten. Starts at 5, 1st grade @ 6 & so on. Kindergarten is the first year of elementary school, usually Middle school is 6th grade through 8th grade & then high school 9th grade through 12th grade which 9th is freshman, 10th is sophmore, 11th is Junior & 12th is senior.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL:

Age 5 (sometimes you're 4 or 6 when you start, but usually 5): Kindergarten

Age 6: first grade

Age 7: second grade

Age 8: third grade

Age 9: fourth grade

Age 10: fifth grade

MIDDLE SCHOOL:

Age 11: sixth grade

Age 12: seventh grade

Age 13: eighth grade

HIGH SCHOOL:

Age 14: ninth grade (freshman)

Age 15: tenth grade (sophomore)

Age 16: eleventh grade (junior)

Age 17: twelfth grade (senior)

That's basically it. I think you would be in tenth grade. If not, then eleventh grade. I know a girl who skipped a grade and it's not weird or anything. Lol.

You would be in 9th grade, but probably have advanced classes. I know that in my school, when you have advanced classes, you're in classes with older people.

if you just turned 15, probably a freshman or sophomore. You'd either go behind or stay.
